SINHGAD ENGINEERING STUDENT BUILDS SOLAR POWERED BICYCLE

Sinhgad Student Solar BicycleContinuing their stride towards providing excellence in education, Sinhgad Technical Education Society (STES) has once again proven their prominence in providing practical industry exposure. Roshan Chumbalkar, a mechanical engineering student from RMD Sinhgad School of Engineering, Warje has dazzled the city by building a custom bicycle running on solar power.

Commenting on his success Roshan said, “It has always been my dream to build something with the use of solar energy. It took 2 years of planning and execution for building the bicycle and this would not have been possible without the support of my parents and the guidance of my professors at Sinhgad college.”

In their endeavor towards protecting the environment, Sinhgad institutes has been undertaking a variety seminars/courses on the importance of alternate energy and innovation in the field of transportation. As air pollution reaches alarming levels, such innovations and help overcome the environmental imbalance and have great potential for growth.

Congratulating the student, Mr. Rohit Navale, Vice President – HR, Sinhgad Institutes said, “It is heartening to see our students pursuing practical experience along with the theoretical know-how and this is something we have always encouraged our students at Sinhgad Institutes. We are confident that the combination of theoretical expertise and the practical experience will help our students accomplish their dreams and aspirations.”

The bicycle has a manufacturing cost of INR 13,000 inclusive of batteries, control and solar panels. The bicycle runs on a maximum speed of 25 km per hour.

Roshan’s solar powered bicycle has been recognized by the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) under their Design Innovation Center (DIC) program. The program aims to provide funds as well as technical expertise for further design and manufacturing.
