Why are Newton’s laws of motion important?
Physics is all around us. We can find Physics as the backbone for any daily life example such as an electric light, electricity, the working of our vehicle, wristwatch, cell phone, CD player, radio, plasma TV set, computer, and – the list goes on. Hence, we should have an idea on physics to make our lives easier and smooth going. There are many important physics concepts such as Ohm’s law, Relativity, Newton’s law, etc which helps us in having a better understanding of almost every ongoing process around us. In this article, we are going to discuss one of the important concepts in physics i.e. Newton’s law.
About Newton’s Law:
Isaac Newton first published his three laws of motion in 1687, which demonstrated to be fundamental laws for describing the motion of a body. These are collectively known as Newton’s laws of motion.
Here are the reasons why Newton’s Laws of Motion is important:
- They form the most intuitively appealing physical theory.
- They represent mankind’s first great success at describing diverse aspects of nature with simple mathematical formulas.
- These laws actually work.
- They lay the groundwork for later physics developments.
Newton’s First Law of Motion:
- It says that: A body at rest or uniform motion will continue to be at rest or uniform motion until and unless a net external force acts on it.
- Real life example is, When a bus suddenly starts, the passengers standing or sitting in the bus, tend to fall backward. This is due to Newton’s first law of motion and can be explained as follows: when the bus suddenly starts, the lower part of the body of the passenger which is in contact with the bus moves along with the bus while the upper part of the body tends to retain its state of rest due to inertia. As a result, the passenger falls backward.
Newton’s Second Law of Motion:
- It says that:The net force experienced by a body is directly proportional to the rate of change of momentum of the body. It can be written as given below,
F = ma
- Real life example is, If two objects having different weight will be thrown off a roof then you might think that the heavier object will hit the ground first, but according to Newton’s second law of motion, the heavier object’s mass decreases because it has more mass. The truth is both the objects will hit the ground at the same time.
Newton’s Third Law of Motion:
- It says that: for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
- Real life example is, When you are walking, you are actually pushing the earth and the earth pushes you back and this causes you to move. The same thing happens in case of cars, bicycles, and boats.
Newton’s laws of motion, however, describes the world using forces. Everyone has pushed or pulled something at least once in their life. Even if the math gets too complicated, most people can intuitively understand concepts like force and mass. This is related to almost everything that happens around us. Hence, Newton’s law is important for everyone.
