Indian Education system is at crossroads. Technological advancements coupled with social changes have lead to a shift in the thinking of society at large. Government has also made its own contribution by being an enabler and facilitator of technology and merging it with the current system of educational pedagogy. This transformation of the education technology is helping both the educators as well as the students.
Teachers and learners are the two pillars of the educational system setup.
Traditional education system is characterised by a process which is cyclical and repetitive The teacher narrates a topic to students, holds demonstration of the topic occasionally, and then assesses the students. However, not every student has the same grasping capabilities, due to which traditional models of education are gradually paving way for newer innovative methods supported by technology.
Govt. of India has acknowledged the limitations of existing pedagogy system and take initiative of incorporating ICT in the education system. With the help of ICT, teachers can easily explain the complex situations to the student and the student, too, retains information better, remembering the visual explanation of a particular situation for a longer time. When education is infused with ICT, learning is augmented, which deeply impacts a student’s learning experience.
ICT supports learning through video chat or online distance learning, meaning a student from any remote area can easily have quality education from any institution of the world. For a country like ours, modern age methodologies can have a transformational impact on our society and the economy as whole. Moreover, since the learning process becomes interactive and comprehensive, it sparks an interest in students leading to greater attentively and attendance at schools. This creates an environment, conducive to learning.
India is emerging as an economic powerhouse and it cannot function without the support of ICT. The gap between demand and supply of higher education has urged the government and institutions of the country to formulate policies and initiatives so that education can easily integrate with ICT.
The central and state governments have taken various initiatives for integration of ICT with education system. Since the past two to three decades, the Indian education system has been plagued by many challenges such as lack of students, poor infrastructure, lack of quality teacher, and a standard curriculum, to name a few. With the integration of ICT in schools, education in India is poised for a paradigm shift, where the education system will be compatible with international education standard.
However, there are many hurdles for its successful integration. ICT requires internet, computer based infrastructure and also satellite support and the process of installation is expensive. Moreover, teachers need to be efficiently trained to understand ICT and how they can utilise its numerous benefits best to successfully impart knowledge to the students.
In the current digital day and age, it is imperative that schools and institutes integrate ICT and be attuned to the modern needs and requirement of students. The use of ICT in learning not only results in the cognitive, social and emotional development of a child, but also has a major motivational influence on his/her learning capabilities.
Today Students find it easier these days when the use ICT tools for completing tasks related to their studies and also imbibing the content. The reliance on technology is growing day by day for the Indian educational system. If handled properly, this could reap us great benefits as India today is at the cusp of an IT boom. Artificial Intelligence (AI), Big data and Nanotechnology are the key areas which educators will have to pay heed to. This could redefine education as well as the future of an entire generation.
